Georgia pigtoe

The Georgia pigtoe (''Pleurobema hanleyianum'') is a rare species of freshwater mussel in the Unionidae family. It is native to Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee in the United States, where it has been extirpated from most of its historical range. It was declared extinct by the IUCN,〔Bogan, A.E. 2000. (''Pleurobema hanleyianum'' ). (2011 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. ) Downloaded on 26 September 2011.〕 but a few living individuals were discovered persisting in the Conasauga River in Georgia〔(''Pleurobema hanleyianum''. ) The Nature Conservancy.〕 and Tennessee.〔USFWS. (Determination of Endangered Status for the Georgia Pigtoe Mussel, Interrupted Rocksnail, and Rough Hornsnail and Designation of Critical Habitat; Final Rule. ) ''Federal Register'' November 2, 2010.〕 It was federally listed as an endangered species in 2010.
